The First Central and Eastern European Conference on Phenomenology: “Person, Community and Identity”, 25-27 martie 2002, Cluj-Napoca

The First Central and Eastern European Conference on Phenomenology: “Person, Community and Identity”, 25-27 martie 2002, Cluj-Napoca. Organized by “Universitatea Babes-Bolyai Cluj-Napoca” in collaboration with the Romanian Society for Phenomenology and the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology (Florida University SUA)

Coordinator: Ion Copoeru

Presentation: The struggle for the recognition of identity and specificity takes, in these times, forms that tend to elude our comprehension. Now more then ever philosophers are called to reflect upon our identity as individuals, as societies, and as cultures. Can respect for individuality be harmonized with recognition of a deep and strong sense of community? Is the tendency toward fragmentation a proper answer to the lack of legitimacy with which large communities are confronted today? Can phenomenology, considered as a general philosophy, as background for the social sciences and as a guide for social action, contribute to the building of a consistent and durable democratic society in the transitional and post-transitional countries? The topic of identity should not be considered as a pure manifestation of racism or xenophobia, but as a central topic of our questioning of the grounds of our humanity. Phenomenology is expected to offer a major contribution to the analysis of the actual historical situation of the world and to provide a useful conceptual means for the reshaping of a future, desirable organization of humankind.
